I challenge you to be uncomfortable

challengeUncomfortableWe’ve all been here before. The client/boss/person in charge says “Hey I saw this super cool whatcha-majig on a site while surfing the web and I think we need to do this!". So you say ok and take a look. It's something that you are not very comfortable with. Heck, maybe you have no clue about it. It may be using a javascript library that you have never used before or even a whole new language!

So the panic sets in and you wonder how your going to get the task done. Now I know that somethings take time and it may be beyond your skills right now but a lot of the times we are able to step up and use the situation as an opportunity to learn something new.

That means that you have to learn to be uncomfortable. That may be with the fact that you are scared to fail or scared that you may look silly while you try. Either way, you have to address the issue.

There are plenty of difficult obstacles in your path. Don't allow yourself to become one of them. - Ralph Marston

Starting out, the task may seem like this giant mountain that can't be climbed. It's very easy to start coming up with tons of reasons why we can't do it. Do yourself a favor. Don't do it. Start breaking the task up into manageable smaller tasks and work on those. Once you complete the first task, the momentum and confidence will help you push through to all the other tasks.

This process most likely will push you in some uncharted waters. You should learn to accept it and learn to like it. I've broadened my developing skills by using this technique. It's forced me to play with new technologies that I may have not used because I had no real reason to use them. I've also developed my blogging skills by using this technique. Writing for me used to be a total chore and I felt very uncomfortable with it. Now I find that it helps me express ideas that I have or things that I may be working on. Writing things out is a very interesting exercise mentally. The process has proven to be very helpful to me and I'm always re-evaluating it, trying to make it better while enjoying the journey along the way.

So next time, don't be so quick to say "I can't". You may find hidden opportunities and embark on a rewarding experience no matter what the task may be.

Security: Why You Need It

securitySafeSo you finally decided to build or re-build your website. That’s great…but now the work begins. You find a professional to help you build a site that fits your needs. You guys plan out the site, get the content for it and then decide on the design. You feel great and are ready to launch the site. Just one thing, have you been proactive in your development plans? Are you using some best practices? What about security?

Security? Why do you need that? I mean, it's expensive and it's unnecessary. Who would want to hack our website?

Well, plenty of people would. Instead of going into why let's just be proactive and talk about how we might defend such attacks. I usually equate this idea with my clients by talking about the insurance on their car. They may be the best driver in the world and they never do anything wrong but what about that car that just blew through the stop sign and t-boned you. Now your in a spot.

Since I tend to develop with WordPress mostly, I'm going to approach this as if I'm defending a WordPress site but these techniques tend to have solutions for whatever you may be building your site with.

First we want to talk about good hosting. Make sure you are comfortable with the hosting you are using. Having a dedicated server would be best but a lot of people start with shared hosting which can have some risks. If a site that is on your host gets compromised, it is easier for them to compromise your site. At this level, they are really not attacking your site, just the server that hosts it. The end result is that they can do things like delete your site and find other ways to get in if they wanted to.

Once you feel that you have a good hosting solution that works for you then you need to think about some things that are directly related to your site.

Some basic things that you can do is to update the WordPress version that you are using. Updates add functionality but they also have security fixes in them. Another thing is to keep your theme updated along with plugins. They have updates for many of the same reason as the WordPress core. Outdated plugins and/or themes can be entry ways for some hacks which can compromise your site.

Something else that I have seem played out over and over with some of my clients is issues that come from not having a back-up plan.

I've had a few occasions where clients have contacted me saying their sites were hacked and in some cases completely gone. They of course are panicked and I end up asking them if they have a backup of their site. 99% of the time it is no. Now as part of my workflow, I make backups of every site I work on every time I work on it. This is usually for my own good. Just in case I have to roll back to undo some changes that I made, I have that option. This is also something that I've used to help clients get their sites back. Rather than have no backup which is a complete rebuild and lost content that they may not be able to get back, I can say "I worked on your site last month so I can take it back to that time which means any work that was done between now and then will be lost". Now most will accept that but wouldn't it be nice if they said "Just use our last backup which we do everyday". I think you can see the value of having a backup plan in place.

This post just touches on some best practices but there are many for and I encourage you to look for them. With a simple google search you can discover many techniques to help minimize any security issues that you may have. Make sure you give it some effort so your not caught with the wrecked car and massive hospital bills and no car insurance. That's just bad business. :)

Fighting Impostor Syndrome

impostorSyndromeHave you ever been in a situation where you are speaking about a subject and then felt the sinking feeling of not being good enough to give the information? It's like the little voice in your head is saying "You don't know what your talking about and soon these people will find out." If you have, then your dealing with Imposter Syndrome. You feel that your a fraud. A fake. A hack.

Wikipedia defines Impostor Syndrome as this:

A psychological phenomenon in which people are unable to internalize their accomplishments. Despite external evidence of their competence, those with the syndrome remain convinced that they are frauds and do not deserve the success they have achieved. Proof of success is dismissed as luck, timing, or as a result of deceiving others into thinking they are more intelligent and competent than they believe themselves to be.

We've all probably felt it at one time or another but we have to learn to work through it. Sometimes we are tasked with giving a presentation to a group. Now that could mean an one on one with a client. They are paying you to give this information so they have an expectation but you have to have a reasonable expectation with yourself. How much do you know about the subject? I try to be upfront as much as possible. If I don't know I tell them right away. If I know a little, I try and share that. I know a lot, then I share that.

But how much is a lot? That is what you may be asking yourself. We may prop our egos up saying, I did this and I did that. I won this award and I was recognized by that group. At the end of the day, we may still feel insecure about the fact that we don't know enough.

First I would say, that what you know, you know. Don't be afraid to share it. It's something that someone else does not know. Sharing this information can also stimulate questions that they may have which really is very useful to them. They now know where to focus. If they have a question, then they can seek out the answer. And if you can share that answer with them, then great.

I personally am a co-organizer for a local WordPress meetup. At first it was very easy for me to say "You can't help run that! You aren't a WordPress expert! Look how much you don't know!" The thing is, that statement is pretty much right. It's hard to define an expert and there are a lot of things I don't know about WordPress. But, there are a lot of things I do know and I'm willing to share them with others that want to learn about them.

Because I was willing to risk my own ego and step up to the plate, I've found the whole experience to be rewarding since I get a thrill from helping others with any issues or questions that they may have.

Don't be afraid to take that risk yourself and share.

Don't let the voice in your head shake your confidence.

You deserve to tell your story or give your advice. You don't need to beat yourself up thinking that you are not the expert that they believe you to be. In that moment and in that time you are so enjoy it and you may learn something in return!

I Blog Therefore I Am

IblogThereforeIam

The summer of 2013 I traveled to a computer convention centered around WordPress in Seattle called, wait for it…..WordCamp! Even though I’m a developer I still am interested in all aspects of building websites including content creation. There are usually two different “tracks” which tend to have two different audiences. One is more technical with the actual developing being the focus but the other tends to be more for content creators, entrepreneur, and other non-developing types. I usually am interested in both subjects so I have to decide which of the two talks at any given time is more important to me. I bring this up because the one that made the biggest impact on me was a talk called "Write or Die" and it was given by Scott Berkun.

In it he talked about the value of writing/blogging and some of the struggles he has dealt with in pursuing a standard. I listened and saw myself being described in his stories. The idea of that we think that no one wants to hear what we have to say or even bigger, we have nothing to say at all. Well, none of that is true. No matter what, there is an audience out there for you. You may have to find it and they may have to find you but there are people that can relate.

One thing that inspired me to begin writing is that he addressed the fear we all have or have had: we are not good enough. His answer was just to do it. Hit publish. No one will read it anyways so get that fear out of the way. Now people may read it but the point that I took away is that no one is judging us so let's get it out of the way.

Every journey begins with a single step.

This is so true. Once I took the leap and got that mental block out of the way, I was able to pursue ideas without fear. One other reason I write is that it has become a challenge for me. I've spoke with other developers who blog and talk about the whole exercise of blogging. The process of picking a subject, articulating your thoughts, and pushing through to the other side which leaves the process just as rewarding to you as it is to others that may read it.

Another side effect I've noticed is that over time you can position yourself as an authority on a particular subject. If I'm able to write about something and can create great comments and dialog then I'm able to learn something. This also works well of course for SEO purposes. If others are interested in that particular subject they may find my blog post or they may share it with others. I feel that there is always something to learn is a situation if we look hard enough at it. It takes some work to find that usually but it's there.

So in the end, blogging has helped me express myself to others and to myself. It has given me clarity in the exercise of writing out my thoughts. It has helped me reach out to others and it has helped me help them by sharing knowledge no matter how limited it is.

If you blog, how has it helped you? If you don't blog yet, imagine how it will help you when you start?

Custom CMS vs WordPress?

cmsVsWordpress

I worked with a group recently who had to address the issue of moving forward in their business with regard to how to best work and service their clients. It seems that they were concerned about providing a level of work and they felt that only a custom CMS could do the job. Since I was asked about it, I told them what I thought. Now I'm a huge fan of WordPress and they knew that. Therefore you could imagine my response. To be fair it was not that easy. I do believe the right tool for the right job. To find out exactly what "the job" is, I had to start probing with questions.

I started asking them who their clients tended to be and how they work with them now. What I was really after is their reasoning for using the processes that they were currently using. I was told needs that clients would have and then the solution or solutions that would be implemented to meet those needs. I would listen and then they would eventually tell me that "WordPress would not be able to do that". The funny thing is, I did not hear anything that left me thinking WordPress could not do what needed to be done.

The issue seemed to be with the knowledge of the groups developers. They were under the impression that WordPress was not a true CMS and did not offer the functionality or flexibility that they needed. It seemed that one developer had dabbled with WordPress a few years ago. Now I know that the platform has matured quite a bit in that time so I took on the responsibility of letting them know just how WordPress could be leveraged to build great sites for their clients while also providing a standard that would not have to be built from scratch by their team.

We spoke about the dangers of having a close proprietary system that only a few developers work on from their team. It would be very difficult to scale that model for them and train others. Plus their is a tendency of small dev teams to create very biased software since they miss out on open source peer reviews. It's very easy to build things that is best from their point of view but not from the point of others. This can be dangerous and rarely do the best decisions get made. It's important in a project to not reinvent the wheel since it is costly and by building off of the work of others, you get to benefit from them.

"If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." - Issac Newton

Even Facebook does this. I once saw an interview with Mark Zuckerberg and he said how they look up to Google and benefit from learning from them. Translation? Let's see what they do that's good and bad and try to out-do the good things and not do the bad things at all. This is valuable. Example: if we need a way to create pages quickly for example, making pages in WordPress does not get too much simpler.

It's also important to reuse as much as you can. If I can bend custom post types to my will as a developer, I should since that saves time having me create that functionality with a custom build then chase down bugs within that. Who needs that? No one needs that and definitely not you or your team.

I can go on making cases to strengthen my point but I think you already get it. Henry Ford could not have built the company had he not learned to leverage what he had to create a smooth process for producing cars for the general public.

In the end, custom work can be valuable but it should be used only when necessary and quality code should be reused as long as it fits the job. Using WordPress is using quality code. I can build my custom solution on top of it and deploy a quality site without going over budget on time or money if I understand how to use it.

So next time you have that custom project come up, do yourself a favor and checkout WordPress. You won't regret it!

Giving Technical Presentations To A Non-Technical Audience

technicalPresentations We’ve all had to do it. Well maybe not all of us but it helps to think we all had to do it while we are doing it. What is it? Giving presentations. Maybe you have been blessed with giving presentations to an audience whom may not be very forgiving to your message. It’s important to know who your talking to. I’ve written about this before. What happens when the subject matter is fairly technical and the audience is not? Too dry and you'll hear them snoring and drooling. Too vague and you probably wasted their time and yours.

Now there are lots of different styles to approaching this some may make light of the situation and some may be all business. While I like both styles, again I think it's important to know who you are speaking to. I enjoy some presentations that are very technical, but I know they work because I like the technical subject matter.

I personally enjoy a nice mix with breaks of light heartedness. We are not always talking about straight up jokes but some humor may reach people better to make your point. That might be a humorous image or saying. This also seems to help because it usually will bridge a gap between you and your audience especially if they view your skill set to be much higher than theirs which leaves them feeling slightly intimidated.

One other thing that I like to use is visuals. This can be charts, graphs or anything else for that matter. I usually put together a slide show that I use to complement my talk. The nice thing is that the slides can be available for the audience to view online at a later date. There are many free and paid tools to use for this. I've been using Prezi lately and it's been fun and easy to use.

One other thing that I feel is important is to make time for questions and answers. Usually I try to save them for the end of the presentation but not always. If the audience is small I might take a question during the presentation and some times I solicit those questions by asking something like "Does that make sense?" or "Do we agree?" All that is a verbal cue to let them know they can get clarification. This way you don't leave them in the dust if they are confused about something early on. If they get clarification, they can then build on that and get more out of the whole experience.

One other thing I like to do before starting presentations is ask a few questions. It may be something like "How many people have used Product A/Service B or so on". This can help set the pace on where we are starting from an understanding point of view.

Overall, I try to be relaxed so my audience can feel relaxed. Try to have fun if it's appropriate. It makes the whole experience much better for everyone involved.

Lessons learned by giving away work

giveAwayWork

Some times it’s tough to know what direction your code/design/project should take. One great way is to observe how it is used. When you do that you can also be gathering feedback. That feedback can be very valuable and can help you determine where to go next. What is the next feature that should be built? How will users use the new tool that we made for them? Will they even use it at all? All these are great questions and are difficult. Without feedback, they are almost impossible to answer.

Now gathering feedback can be tough. It also depends on the nature of your project. Is it free or is it a premium service/product that people are paying for? I've found that people are a lot more forgiving if the product is free, though you may have a bit harder time getting good feedback. If people pay they tend to be more vocal. You can also observe people in user testing which can also show you how people are using the theme/plugin. Some people may have difficulty telling you about the issues that they had but observing them gives you a clearer picture along with other feedback you have gathered.

If you have ever created a plugin to host on WordPress.org's plugin repository you will know that they provide you with a forum for users to let you know of any issues or problems that they may have. If you see some issues keep occurring then you may realize that you have a flaw in maybe how you designed your plugin. The forums tend to only show problematic issues. They don't really help in the way of gathering information for better user experience for example (I know fixing flaws helps but I think you get what I'm saying).

I saw a show on tv that was about gun manufacturers once. Now this was a huge cannon weapon that can be operated by one person but would have to be set up on a tripod first. This was designed for war-time conflicts. The manufacturers issued a few weapons to soldiers and then observed how they used their weapon. They noted that depending on the environment, the gun may be used differently. They also observed how the gun was carried. Remember, this was a war time scenario and the soldiers had no time for things that did not work properly. The manufacturers witnessed the soldiers slinging the massive gun by the barrel and carrying it over their shoulders when moving. This was a pain point for the engineers. They imagined the weapon being moved a certain way but the soldiers found a way that worked for them and was easier. The manufacturer took that information and instead of trying to do away with it, tweaked it and made it better. Had they not observed the soldiers using their product in the trenches (literally), they would have been clueless to know how to improve it.

So sometimes it's easier to give your product/service away to test. That's what beta testing is all about. Your payment is free feedback. That feedback when used correctly will help you find tune that product/service into something that is much more beneficial to you and your team and your users.

Bringing Value

bringingValue
When a potential client reaches out to me for some possible work, they are doing so because they have something that they need my services for. Now I know that sounds silly as it should go without saying but if you really think about it, they have problems and are looking for a competent person/company to solve it for them. That is how I look at it. I'm solving problems for them. If a client needs a website done, more than likely they need to get a domain name. If they tell me they do not have hosting, I can assist them on finding hosting that meets the requirements that they need.

There has been plenty of times while scoping out projects with clients, that we come across something in the project that was maybe unforeseen and they are stuck on how to get that done so we can't move on. This can be a great time to upsell a service or to charge more to provide the extra service that they need. When I first started to take client work on it was common for me to find out that they do not have hosting. For the first year of my business I would assist them on how to get hosting but then I started to realize that I could provide the hosting and create a passive income for me as well. I found the clients appreciated it since really the work is already done for them in the way that they don't have to choose a hosting company since they may not even understand what they need. They already trust me and I have now demonstrated value to them by removing these other issues that are in the way of their goal(s). They may view you as a consultant as well. It's very common for my clients or someone that I've done some work for in the past to reach out to me and ask me about a certain service, technology, or anything else that I may be able to assist them with. Why? Because again, they value my opinion.

This is not that difficult from my view because I enjoy learning so I am always advancing on some level. I'm working with the actual technology, I'm reading blog posts and I'm networking and socializing with people that have opinions that I value. As a matter of fact, I've pulled in some outside contractors that are specialists in their field to work on projects because their skill set is valuable to me. Networking is all about that.

Even an email that I get from a potential new client might be hinged around a particular question. This is an opportunity for me to bring value to them. This happens naturally if you truly can solve their issue. It sells itself as long as your able to communicate it well with them.

So remember the next time you get an email, receive a phone call or meet that person at the next social gathering. If they are in the market for any of your services put them at ease and let them know how you can bring them value by working with them and solving their problems. You both will benefit from the exchange.

Partner Up!

teamwork-dogs

Have you ever had some great idea that you would like to do but not sure that you can pull it off? Maybe the idea is not too great but it is still something that you would like to pursue but there are some other things in the way of that idea that you might be clueless on how to get done. Sometimes the answer might be to find someone to partner up with for help.

With the right person, you can find someone to compliment you. Say your really great at being a cook and would love to open a restaurant but anything outside of cooking is just not appealing to you. In order to realize you dreams, you may want to find someone to partner with who is great at running the business part.

This strategy can apply with more than two people and in many different industries. I've had success with it when it comes to working on projects. I have a network of people that I partner up with on certain projects. Sometime specialists are needed to get an overall quality that may be difficult on your own.

You may find it difficult to find partners at first but there are resources that you can take advantage of locally. Meetup.com is a great place to network to find people to work with, share ideas, or just to socialize. There are a few choice meetings that I attend that let's me meet like-minded people and relationships happen fairly naturally from there. At a local WordPress meetup (which I am a co-organizer) I get a chance to meet local business owners, designers, developers and entrepreneurs. From that group alone I can choose to partner with someone on an idea if they can fill that role for me. I've also been approached by others looking to recruit someone for their project. And that is one meetup and their are several more like it from meetups geared more towards writers and some geared more towards entrepreneurs. A pool of knowledge and potential partners are out there if you go looking for them.

Also, remember that you don't have to be an expert in a field to add value to a team. You just have to be able to fill the role. You may find that you have the skill set to be that missing piece that someone or group is looking for so don't be afraid to get out there and explore the possibilities. You won't regret it. :)

The Importance of Knowing Your Users

trackUsers

You know what I love to do? Go and speak with very technical people in a field that I know nothing about in the language of their profession to ensure I am utterly confused by what they are telling me. What's that you say? You would hate that? Confession time: I hate it too. The thing is most of the time that would not happen because the professional that I am speaking with would (hopefully) explain to me what he/she is trying to say in language that I could understand. To do so otherwise would not be very effective of them.

I try and keep this in mind when either writing for the web, consulting with clients, or just having conversations in my everyday life. I should make an attempt to know my audience. It's important that we bridge any communication breakdown so that we can stay as transparent as possible with each other. Nobody wants to be left in the dark and some may have trouble asking for clarification.

"If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, then the general is to blame. But, if orders are clear and the soldiers nevertheless disobey, then it is the fault of their officers. - Sun Tzu"

That quote has always reminded me that if I am conveying information, it is up to me to make sure that I am clear and understandable. If I am not then I have failed in communicating. This means that I have to understand my audience and not talk over them or make assumptions about their level of ability. I also have to give them opportunities to clarify if needed.

People also tend to be slightly defensive and intimidated if they don't understand what you are trying to say. I remember a professor once told me that during user-testing for web projects that he was working on, he would tell the users that he is not testing them but the website and he would also try and make small talk to find out something about them and confess to them that he does not know that much about the subject that they were speaking about. This made him seem human and not this super intelligent being that they feared looking foolish in front of. They know something he does not know. Now they're even. It's a great tactic that puts people at ease and it was not hard for him to do that.

Also, don't be afraid to ask questions like are you familiar with "Subject X"? Questions like this need to be asked in a non-pretentious way. If people know you are genuine they tend to be more honest with their answers or course on the web there many be no immediate feedback since you are not having a dialog with a person so as a general rule, I tend to keep it in the simplest language possible so I don't lose my audience. Of course tools like analytics can help you get to know who your audience is as well.

So remember that if you know who you are speaking to, you can communicate better by tailoring your conversation to them to deliver the message as effectively as possible. It's not easy and it's something that I try and work on everyday. Now good luck on that next public speaking engagement! :)

Want to be more productive? Take a break!

takeBreaks

Running a business is hard work. Heck just working a job is hard work. It takes a lot of effort to do it well. Let’s face it, some days you are easily distracted and you just don't want to be there. Days like that you would be doing everyone (including yourself!) a favor by just taking a break.

The thing is it's true. When you don't want to be there you tend to be unproductive. Now you can't use this as an excuse to not work but sometimes it's best to take a break. I code a lot at night and find myself trying to solve issues and sometimes I just hit a wall. Usually it's because I'm tired and I know it. Even though I want to try and push through, I know that if I go to bed, more than likely the good nights rest will give me some clarity when I look at the problem in the morning.

I can't tell you how many times that has happened. But I don't have to wait until the end of the day for that to happen. Sometimes I'll be struggling on how to handle a problem and I'll go take a walk, get a bite to eat, go visit with someone, anything to get my mind off the problem. When I return, I get a fresh view of the issue. Don't force it. There is a saying in kung fu that says to "let the technique in". There is also one that says "don't force the technique". Both of these are based off the idea to not fight it or struggle with it. Learn to let it happen. Now you don't have to totally forget it when you take a break. I like to think of it as putting it on the backburner. I have had eureka moments at the oddest times. The answer comes to you when it comes to you.

Years ago I dealt table games at a casino. We used to take a 20 minute break every hour. At first that seemed generous and I quickly found out why that happens. The powers that be in the casino industry discovered that people tend to "break down" and make more mistakes after working an hour on the games. It was worth it for them to give you the break so they would have a consistent, quick, productive game with very little mistakes on it. More breaks equals more money in that scenario. Sometimes its true in our own workflow. Don't be afraid to see it and try it. Don't buy in to the myth that you can't take breaks or you will be seen as unproductive.

How have you used breaks to your advantage for problem solving?

Don’t put roadblocks in front of your users – streamline their experience!

websiteRoadblocks

Don’t you love starting complicated processes? No? Well your users don’t either. That’s why it’s important to make things easy for the users or your website.

Years ago I read a book by Steve Krug called Don’t Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability. The book taught me how to design for users to be able to complete a goal. It may be for them to read a blog post. It could also be to sign up for a newsletter. Or it could be to purchase an item. Any of these scenarios could be a potential bottle-neck that traps and confuses your users.

We should be designing for children. Not necessarily children but at that mentality. Things should be intuitive and easily understood. No need to make a process difficult when it does not have to be.

Fortunately there are some good tools out there to use. Using heat maps can help discover where focus is on our site if your not sure. I've used Crazy Egg in the past with great results. They can help you discover sections of your site where the focus tends to be. It may be your logo, a graphic or block of text on a page or a menu item. Either way, you will gain some knowledge on where people's eyeballs go first and spend the most time.

Another great way to see what people may be doing is using some analytical service or software. This will help you see referrals that show how people made it to your site, what page they landed on, and the path that they took as they moved through your site. I've been using Google Analytics for quite some time now and it gives me a ton of info that I can then tweak to get better results if needed.

A quick real world example: I used to work for a company that did 17 million in sales in one year and 40% of that was done on the ecommerce website which I was in charge of. We realized at one point that people were using it much more than the 40% but they would see the products, then call in to make the order. We were able to find out why that was happening by gathering some feedback. Part of the reason was a clunky checkout system that people either did not want to mess with or would abandon at times out of confusion or frustration. When we addressed those issues we were able to improve conversions. Moral of the story? Little things matter and it's easy to sweep problems under the rug but first we have to know what those "problems" are.

I will say that for most small businesses the first thing that they will skimp on is user testing. They see it as unncessary or too expensive. But, there are ways to make it doable. Start with a small group. It could be friends, family, strangers, or co-workers as long as they are not involved with the project - that way they will not be biased. Ask them to do some tasks on the site with no instruction from you and watch them. Where are their confusion points? Do they understand that slick design interface that you are super proud of or is it too confusing and does not work as you had imagined? Things like this can give you some clarity on your projects. The more testing the better but some testing is better than no testing.

In the end, hopefully you and your team (if you have one) will see the value of streamlining your users experience and how to help determine what that experience is. It's not too hard or too late to start and it really helps. Now go build something great that people love!

Don’t alienate your mobile users!

alienateMobileUsers

You care about your business. You understand the value of feedback from your customers. You do your best to make sure their experience with you is the best that you can offer. You and your employees and/ or team pride yourselves on excellent custom service. If this is you, than ask yourself if you are making things easy on all of your users to your website.

Yes, you tell yourself that your site is awesome on your laptop or desktop computer but what about the mobile users? The smartphone market is expanding every day. About 7 years ago, a instructor of mine in a computer class, held up a phone and said "this is the true personal computer". This was before the smartphone revolution. Now with smartphones everywhere we are now seeing that that prediction as come true.

It's easy to tell ourselves that mobile users will just go to the desktop version of the site if they need to but, are we sure that they will? People are on the move and I can tell you from my own experience, most will not. They want the information right then and there and if they can't get it, they will most likely move on.

And this is the point that this post is trying to get at: don't forget about your mobile users! Your website should display in a mobile friendly way. Personally, every website I work on (unless I'm specifically told not to) is a responsive design. This means that it "responds" to the screen on your mobile phone. That usually means moving content around in a much linear fashion. This website itself is mobile if you are reading this on a "desktop" device. Those that are reading this on a mobile device already know what's up and I'm pretty sure they appreciate it.

The whole experience of designing a mobile website is an exercise in efficiency. The process make you prioritize your content and your goal. You are forced to work within a smaller space so a streamlined website is the final product if done right. I've talked in the past about the importance of learning, and learning to love it. It's important to understand where improvement can be made on your website. Take the time to understand what your users are looking for and ask yourself if you are serving them. If your not sure, use something like google analytics to tell you how many users are visiting your site from a mobile platform.

Another thing a mobile friendly website shows is an attention to detail. It shows that you've thought of various scenarios that people consume information from. I this can help strengthen their perception of you or their willingness to work with you. That could also be the deciding factor.

Once you train yourself to see through this lens you should be able to indentify your users and their needs which gives you an opportunity to serve them. You wouldn't leave money on the table, so don't forget your mobile users since they will play and increasing role in your business in the future.

Continued Learning And Learning To Love It

continuedLearning

One thing I’ve realized by being a business owner is that you got to love learning (or at least like it).

Think about some of the first deals you ever made. More than likely, they weren’t that great. Buy hey, hind sight is twenty-twenty. You now know that because you’ve learned a lot since then. You feel more confident in your decisions because if you are like me, you’ve made every mistake that can be made in your business or at least it seems like it. So it’s pretty safe to say that you’re now enjoying that education even though you paid for it by blood, sweat, and tears.

"If you learn from defeat, you haven't really lost." - Zig Ziglar

This is something that took me some time to learn but now I apply to all aspects of my life.

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." - Thomas A. Edison

Again, this is another way to look at any setbacks that we may come in contact with. It's not a game over situation, it just requires a new way to attack the issue. But being able to do that means that you have to learn from the experience which means you better learn to get enjoyment out of it. Maybe not at first, but in retrospect. As a web developer and business owner, I've misquoted projects in the past because of a series of small mistakes: not scoping out the project well enough, not understanding how to price correctly, not understanding the time frame correctly, etc.

One personal thing about me is that I'm into martial arts. Kung fu to be exact. The reason why I bring that up is that I remember one time while training with my instructor, out of some frustration with myself, I mumbled that I could not stop his palm strike that would just hit me right in the chest and push me back. His response on how to stop it? Get hit with it one-thousand times. The number is arbitrary but the lesson is there is no better incentive than being uncomfortable.

"I challenge you to be uncomfortable." - Sifu Andrew Knapp

This is another thing that I was told at a time when I was reluctant on getting outside of my comfort zone. In my business I try not to be too complacent. If I am, I more than likely am not tweaking my techniques. There is no such thing as perfection, so that means there is always room for improvement. That being said, it's super important to celebrate the victories no matter how small.

So next time you feel that it's a drag to learn a new process, or skill, or whatever it is that comes at you, just take some perspective and comfort in knowing that you are making yourself stronger, better, more efficient. Never stop learning and never stop loving it.

The value of having a (good) website

Yeah

Working in web development, I’m always interacting with new potential clients. When we get together to discuss their project, it’s up to me to get the information that I need to understand the clients needs. I've found that quite a few do not know what they are really looking for.

Sometimes they have very fixed ideas on what they want but when I probe deeper with my questions, they don't have very good reasons to justify their decisions. It may be some cool feature that they saw and they would like something like it. I then take it upon myself to discuss the pros and cons of that feature. Most of the time I can talk them out of it if it was a bad decision to begin with. This is part of the reason why they are working with me. I bring my knowledge and expertise to the table to take an objective look at the project.

But a good website/project is more than looks or cool features. A well designed website is also about the design of the functionality as well as the looks. Imagine if you went into a store to buy your favorite product and there were several distractions in the way. A pushy salesman trying to sell you something that you did not need. A manual that you had to read before you could purchase the product. I think you get the point. That is how most people feel when using a poorly designed site.

Michelangelo once said "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."

Most of the time it becomes important to remember the objection of the website. What does it do and what is necessary? We start removing bloated features and things that truly don't make sense or things that are not needed. By the time we are done in the planning phase, the site (most of the time) barely resembles the preconceived ideas that the client brought forward and we end up with a better product in the end. It's all about justifying our decisions to make sure we are not being subjective when it's not appropriate.

In the end, a good website is not there to confuse the users. It's there with a goal whatever that may be. It's our job as website owners and/or developers to make sure that path is clear to create a great experience for everyone that uses the site.

If you follow this idea in the planning phase of your next website/project, you will have a much more successful site in the way of usability and also a much more stress free experience for yourself based off the confidence of your decisions.

Why I Use WordPress (From a Developers View)

wordpressDevelopers

I wrote a post recently on Why I Use WordPress (From An End User’s View) where I spoke about the power of WordPress from the End Users view. In this post I’m focusing on why I use WordPress from a developers view.

First off, WordPress is drop-dead easy to get up and running. You install the software using the 5 minute set up or use something like Softaculous and you will be playing/working with it in no time. The platform has a very easy user interface that can be altered or customed by using custom post types and/or custom taxonomies. That means you can basically tweak it and bend it to your will in practically any way imaginable. WordPress itself is an ecosystem that has a thriving community.

The WordPress Codex is a great resource and a great place to start when needing to get an understanding on something while writing code. If you have an issue or want to ask a question or post some code then head over to the forums where you can most likely find an answer. Most likely someone has already asked the question that you need an answer to.

The Plugin repository is another incredible resource. As of this writing there are 25,877 plugins in the plugin repository. Granted, it is a bit of a buyer beware issue of finding a good plugin that has been updated and is being currently supported. If I'm looking for a plugin, I'll look to see when it was last updated and then look at the overall rating. The best tip-off is checking the support forums. Are questions being answered? If so, then you are most likely good to go.

But the nature of how the plugins work is something awesome in itself. With some development chops, you can create a plugin to do what ever you need to do yourself. I myself have been getting into more plugin development since that is where my interest has been lately. Of course, there are some great premium (paid) plugins out there to that are life savers.

Another great thing is that WordPress has some built in user roles so when I turn over the site to the client I can create a specific role for them so it's safer for them to use the site since we don't have to worry about them damaging anything. More than likely, they do not need access to things like installing plugins, the code editor, or changing the Permalinks. Some of these things can take down their site if they don't know what they are doing. But maybe they have users in their organization that needs access to the site but does not need to effect anyone but them. Maybe they are a guest blogger? We can make them an author and then not have to worry about them getting into things they shouldn't be into.

Overall, I've been focusing on WordPress exclusively for the past year because it answers so many questions/issues/concerns that I have when starting a new project. This has been a fun experience for me. If you develop, you may want to give WordPress a try for your next project. You won't regret it.

Why I use WordPress (from a end user point of view)

wordpressUsers

I freelance and get a chance to work with some great people. Most of my clients are small to medium sized businesses that are looking for a website or some kind of online presence. When they get in touch with me I start asking questions on what their end goal is. The questions become more involving and I discover that some are interested in a website (whatever platform or CMS that is) and some are wanting a WordPress site because they have either heard of it before, or they have used it in the past. They usually are very open on why they want to use WordPress and I'm happy to hear that from them. I end up having a great conversation which results in some solid reasoning on why they should be choosing a WordPress site.

First, it has a great user interface. It's very easy to find what you need and pretty intuitive on how to use it with minimal training, although some time invested in understanding your site is time well spent. Second, it's easy to find support. In a lot of cities there are WordPress meetups to show up at and meet like-minded people whether that is end users (bloggers, content creators, or owners) and/or developers/designers. I co-organize one in Peoria, IL and the energy is great and benefitial to all that show up. The online community for WordPress is huge. The forums at WordPress.org (which I volunteer from time to time on) are great and more than likely you can get your questions answered there. Also, there is no shortage of hired help whether that be a developer/designer/consultant.

So when deciding on a platform, make sure you take the time to understand what you want out of it and the total cost of getting that. The time spent is worth it.

The importance of getting involved

2013-06-09 15.20.44

I’ve been trying to focus on getting more involved in my development community. Not just the local community but also the world community. Some of the ways I’ve been able to do that is to help organize a local WordPress meetup, volunteering some time to spend on the WordPress forums, and just recently, volunteering some time to help out at the Seattle WordPress Wordcamp.

For me, it's been huge. When you get involved, you share your experiences by helping or teaching. When you teach, you learn. To go through the process of discussing a subject, you are forced to reflect on that subject and you may find that you are discovering details about it that were just under the surface for you. Also, other people's questions and observations can shake things up and make you look at the subject from a different angle.

So if you want to gain some new insight, get involved in the community. You won't regret it after you discover the benefits.
