The value of having a (good) website

Yeah

Working in web development, I’m always interacting with new potential clients. When we get together to discuss their project, it’s up to me to get the information that I need to understand the clients needs. I've found that quite a few do not know what they are really looking for.

Sometimes they have very fixed ideas on what they want but when I probe deeper with my questions, they don't have very good reasons to justify their decisions. It may be some cool feature that they saw and they would like something like it. I then take it upon myself to discuss the pros and cons of that feature. Most of the time I can talk them out of it if it was a bad decision to begin with. This is part of the reason why they are working with me. I bring my knowledge and expertise to the table to take an objective look at the project.

But a good website/project is more than looks or cool features. A well designed website is also about the design of the functionality as well as the looks. Imagine if you went into a store to buy your favorite product and there were several distractions in the way. A pushy salesman trying to sell you something that you did not need. A manual that you had to read before you could purchase the product. I think you get the point. That is how most people feel when using a poorly designed site.

Michelangelo once said "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."

Most of the time it becomes important to remember the objection of the website. What does it do and what is necessary? We start removing bloated features and things that truly don't make sense or things that are not needed. By the time we are done in the planning phase, the site (most of the time) barely resembles the preconceived ideas that the client brought forward and we end up with a better product in the end. It's all about justifying our decisions to make sure we are not being subjective when it's not appropriate.

In the end, a good website is not there to confuse the users. It's there with a goal whatever that may be. It's our job as website owners and/or developers to make sure that path is clear to create a great experience for everyone that uses the site.

If you follow this idea in the planning phase of your next website/project, you will have a much more successful site in the way of usability and also a much more stress free experience for yourself based off the confidence of your decisions.

Why I Use WordPress (From a Developers View)

wordpressDevelopers

I wrote a post recently on Why I Use WordPress (From An End User’s View) where I spoke about the power of WordPress from the End Users view. In this post I’m focusing on why I use WordPress from a developers view.

First off, WordPress is drop-dead easy to get up and running. You install the software using the 5 minute set up or use something like Softaculous and you will be playing/working with it in no time. The platform has a very easy user interface that can be altered or customed by using custom post types and/or custom taxonomies. That means you can basically tweak it and bend it to your will in practically any way imaginable. WordPress itself is an ecosystem that has a thriving community.

The WordPress Codex is a great resource and a great place to start when needing to get an understanding on something while writing code. If you have an issue or want to ask a question or post some code then head over to the forums where you can most likely find an answer. Most likely someone has already asked the question that you need an answer to.

The Plugin repository is another incredible resource. As of this writing there are 25,877 plugins in the plugin repository. Granted, it is a bit of a buyer beware issue of finding a good plugin that has been updated and is being currently supported. If I'm looking for a plugin, I'll look to see when it was last updated and then look at the overall rating. The best tip-off is checking the support forums. Are questions being answered? If so, then you are most likely good to go.

But the nature of how the plugins work is something awesome in itself. With some development chops, you can create a plugin to do what ever you need to do yourself. I myself have been getting into more plugin development since that is where my interest has been lately. Of course, there are some great premium (paid) plugins out there to that are life savers.

Another great thing is that WordPress has some built in user roles so when I turn over the site to the client I can create a specific role for them so it's safer for them to use the site since we don't have to worry about them damaging anything. More than likely, they do not need access to things like installing plugins, the code editor, or changing the Permalinks. Some of these things can take down their site if they don't know what they are doing. But maybe they have users in their organization that needs access to the site but does not need to effect anyone but them. Maybe they are a guest blogger? We can make them an author and then not have to worry about them getting into things they shouldn't be into.

Overall, I've been focusing on WordPress exclusively for the past year because it answers so many questions/issues/concerns that I have when starting a new project. This has been a fun experience for me. If you develop, you may want to give WordPress a try for your next project. You won't regret it.
